چکیده

Scalable, hierarchical, all-optical, WDM networks for processor interconnection have been recently considered. This paper introduces an access protocol for this type of network which supports a distributed shared memory environment. The objectives of the protocol are reduced average latency per packet, support of broadcast/multicast, collisionless communication, and the exploitation of the inherent distributed shared memory traffic characteristics. A hybrid strategy, in terms of channel reservation, is described that trades maximum capacity for reducedcommunication latency to improve system response. The performance of the protocol is analyzed through analytic and simulation models with varying system parameters such as number of nodes and channels. The performance of the new protocol is compared to a TDM-based protocol and their relative merits and demerits are examined.

A Multi-Level WDM Access Protocol for an Optically Interconnected Multiprocessor System

Scalable, hierarchical, all-optical WDM networks for processor interconnection in multiprocessor systems have been recently considered. The principal objective of this paper is to introduce an access protocol for this type of network which supports a distributed shared memory (DSM) environment. The objectives of the protocol are reduced averagelatency per packet, support of broadcast/multicast,...

Memory and Network Architecture Interaction in an Optically Interconnected Distributed Shared Memory System

This paper develops a performance model of an optically interconnected parallel computer system operating in a distributed shared memory environment. The performance model is developed to reflect the impact of low level optical media access protocol and optical device switching latency on high level system performance. This enables the model to predict the performance impact in supporting distr...

Media Access Protocols for WDM Networks with On-Line Scheduling

This paper studies media access protocols which support collision-free broadcast/multi-cast communication for optically connected star-coupled systems with Wavelength Division Multiple Access channels. An early hybrid access protocol, consisting of reservation and of receiver channels pre-allocation, allows reservation for exactly one WDM channel per node during the reservation phase. We extend...

Media Access Protocol Impact on a WDMA Passive Star Photonic Network with Distributed Shared Memory System

Abstract This paper develops a performance model of an optically interconnected parallel computer system operating in a distributed shared memory environment. The performance model is developed to reflect the impact of low level optical media access control and optical device switching latency on high level system performance. The photonic network is based on a passive star-coupled structure th...

Design and Performance Analysis of Pre-Allocation Protocols for WDM Photonic Networks

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) enables partitioning the enormous bandwidth of photonic networks into multiple smaller, more manageable, multiple access channels. These channels operate at a data rate which matches the electronic interface speed, viz. Gbps. Media access protocols for an optically interconnected star-coupled WDM network with no control channel are introduced and compared....
